Portugal increasingly sought after for long-term stays

It is known that the pandemic brought about various changes, with one of them focusing on the working habits of the population. Concepts such as 'remote work' and 'digital nomads' gained visibility, giving rise to a new trend in accommodation reservations.

This trend is reflected in the demand for long-term stays (1 month or more), a phenomenon that has grown by about 106% across Europe. Portugal is on the list of countries that are increasingly receiving foreigners, much due to its mild climate throughout the year, quality of life, and cultural and leisure offerings. Lisbon is the top choice for digital nomads, with Porto, Algarve, and Madeira also on the list of chosen destinations.

The Airbnb reservation platform is one of the most used to find accommodations in this regime, having found a business opportunity here.

Together with about 20 cities worldwide, including Lisbon, Airbnb worked on the creation of a kind of innovation hub, focusing on good practices in remote work. Essentially, "a sort of network of cities promoting remote work, associated best practices, and experiences of long-term stays."

Another trend observed was the growth in demand for more dispersed locations, rather than just large cities. This allows for promoting and redirecting tourism traffic, redistributing it to other locations, explains Nathan Blecharczyk, co-founder of the Airbnb platform.

In light of this, Airbnb recently implemented the search for "experience" rather than just location, creating 55 categories. By using this functionality, users are more likely to choose destinations that would otherwise be difficult to find, ensuring greater use of the platform's wide range of accommodations.
